Day Trips from Delano California
Delano families are always looking for new and different things. West to the beach or north to the Bay Area are popular options. However, within two hours east of us was many interesting sites that showcase the beauty of the Sierra. While there, you have plenty of opportunity to your back, exercise, breathe fresh air and stretch.
Only thirty minutes from Delano and home to the annual Apple Festival Springville, Springville is a great destination for a quick get-away and semolina from Delano. It is also on the way to many great places in the high Sierra.
Drive past Springville to Camp Nelson, about 45 minutes away. The road is winding and in winter may not be passable without chains or a 4-wheel drive. (Stuck on a winter road can cause you to put your back and could land you back in the office of the Delano chiropractor’s far too soon.) Once you are in Camp Nelson, you’ll enjoy Giant Sequoia trees made this part of the famous Sierra. There are numerous hiking trails and fishing at Camp Nelson. The historic lodge Camp Nelson is our pick for the night.
Past Camp Nelson, drive along the Great Western Highway (190) to divide and trembling Aspen Ponderosa Lodge. In autumn, the leaves on the trees vibrate yellow aspen and subtle crackle in the wind. Seeing the leaves in autumn is a pleasure not to be missed. You catch some of the aspens at the Ponderosa Lodge where we recommend a hamburger and fries on the open deck. Ponderosa Pines will tower above you as you dine.
Drive about five minutes about Ponderosa Lodge and take the dirt road to Dome Rock. The road is bumpy but well worth the back country of the Sierra see. Dome Rock is also a favorite for amateur astronomers.
Dome of Rock, continue driving for about twenty minutes until you see the trail of a Hundred Giants, a completely wheelchair-accessible trail, paved with asphalt, and as beautiful as a forest of redwood giants in the Park. For $ 5 to park, enjoy this moderate hike – help your back and your body by getting a little practice.
After your walk on the trail, drive back to Delano through California Hot Springs, about 30 minutes drive away. Historic Hot Springs Resort is still open and offers swimming and casual food for the family. The pool water itself is a warm 80 degrees and the two hot tubs are more than 100 degrees. From California Hot Springs, drive back to the Delano is located about 55 minutes.
The Sierra Nevada is close to Delano and offers residents many opportunities to spend time with their families and stay healthy at the same time.
