Chile Travel: Puerto Varas
Chilean Lake District is filled with a spectacular array of deep blue mountain lakes, snow-capped volcanoes and pristine forests. Often compared with the Alps in Switzerland, Chile’s Lake District is a must-see during a holiday Chile. The mysterious islands, traditional German architecture, cascading waterfalls and breathtaking volcanoes provide countless opportunities to explore. Begin your journey in this outstanding area in the picturesque town of Puerto Varas. Located on the southwest corner of Lake Llanquihue, Puerto Varas is blessed with a beautiful view across the lake to two snow-capped volcanoes, Osorno and Calbuco. In the footsteps of Pucón, Puerto Varas is becoming the next big outdoor adventure sports destination. There are cables for canopy tours in the city on the hill, climbing, hiking, skiing and water sports such as kayaking and fishing. Puerto Varas is busy in the summer, but much less in the winter when only strong skiers and mountaineers venture outdoors.
This excellent Southern Lakes base has much more than just outdoor sports. The host city has nice bars, nice restaurants, and comfortable accommodations. The larger town of Puerto Montt is only a short distance away, if you can not find what you need in Puerto Varas.
Parque Philippi, on top of a hill, is a beautiful park with an electric clock that chimes the quarter hour during the day. To reach the top walk to Hotel Cabanas del Lago Klenner, the railroad and the fence is on the right. The center is located at the foot of the hill, but the town stretches eastward along the lake to Puerto Chico. There are a number of German-style mansions that you can admire in the north and east of Gran Hotel Puerto Varas, and in 1918 a Catholic church built by Jesuits in the German Baroque style.
Puerto Varas is a great place to stay while touring around the lake. A paved road runs south to Ensenada along the shore on the southwest edge of the lake. The best beaches are Playa Hermosa and Playa Niklitschek. Continue on the road and you walk into the lake of La Poza and a narrow channel lined with vegetation, the channel leading to another lake, Laguna Encantada. Further down there is a water mill and a restaurant run by the Club Alemán.
